🇺🇸New Mexico State Electric Bike Laws

The state of New Mexico (NM) Motor Vehicle Division defines electric bikes as regular bicycles and they are subject to the same laws as traditional bicycles.
The state of New Mexico does not require license or registration of electric bicycles.
The state of New Mexico doesn’t provide restrictions on motor power or throttle for ebikes.Â
The state of New Mexico doesn’t have age restrictions for riding an electric bike.Â
Helmets are required for all riders under 14 years of age when riding on roadways.
Electric bicycles may be ridden on roadways, in bike lanes and on bike paths.
Additional notes:
Every bicycle (including electric bikes) when in use at nighttime shall be equipped with:
- A lamp on the front which shall emit a white light visible from a distance of at least five hundred feet to the front and with a red reflector on the rear of a type approved by the division which shall be visible from all distances from fifty feet to three hundred feet to the rear when directly in front of lawful upper beams of head lamps on a motor vehicle.
- A lamp emitting a red light visible from a distance of five hundred feet to the rear may be used in addition to the red reflector.
No one should ride a bike unless it is equipped with a bell or other device capable of giving a signal audible for a distance of at least 100 ft.
Every bicycle should be equipped with a brake which will allow the rider to make the brake wheels skid on dry, level, clean pavement.Â
