🇺🇸New Hampshire State Electric Bike Laws

The state of New Hampshire defines ebikes as an electric assisted bicycle equipped with a motor of less than 750w. Electric bikes are classified as:

• Class 1: eBikes equipped with a pedal-assist only motor which stops when the bike reaches 20 mph. 
• Class 2: Electric bikes equipped with a motor that may be used exclusively to propel the bicycle and stop when the bike reaches the speed of 20 mph.
• Class 3: Electric bicycles equipped with a motor that provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling and stops when the rider stops pedaling or when the bicycle reaches the speed of 28 mph.

The state of New Hampshire does not require license or registration of electric bicycles. 

The state of New Hampshire determines that ebikes must have a motor of less than 750w.

No person under the age of 16 years can operate a class 3 electric bike, unless they are riding as a passenger.

Helmets are required for all riders under 18 years of age.

An electric bicycle can be used wherever a bicycle may be operated, subject to the following limitations:

• A class 1 or class 2 electric bicycle may be ridden on bicycle paths or on multi-use paths where bicycles are permitted. However, a city, town, or state agency having jurisdiction over a bicycle or multi-use path may prohibit the operation of a class 1 or class 2 electric bicycle on that path.
• A class 3 electric bicycle shall not be ridden on a bicycle or multi-use path unless it is within or adjacent to a highway or roadway, or unless a city, town, or state agency having jurisdiction over the path permits the operation of class 3 electric bicycles on that path.

Electric bikes are generally not allowed on non-motorized trails.
